Patriots now hold the 5th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft

What felt like a more promising game against the Dolphins this week after getting a solid win against the Bills in Week 7, the Patriots disappointed fans once again with a brutal loss in Miami on Sunday.

Other than falling to a 2-6 record on the season, securing last place in the AFC, their fate got even worse after the Chargers beat the Bears on Sunday Night Football, pushing New England to the fifth overall selection in next year's draft.

Earlier in the day, they were as high as the third pick in the first round, much to some of the fans' delight. Those still hoping for a full tank job the rest of the season certainly did not enjoy hearing that they fell two spots throughout the day, but having a top-five pick is generally not a bad thing for any team in need of incredible improvement.

Now that the part of their schedule allows the chance to go on a winning streak, with the Commanders, Colts, and Giants on the docket the next three weeks, they may fall lower in the draft, closer to where they've been over the last few years.

But if they continue on the path they're going, you shouldn't count on that happening.

Of course, it all depends on what you hope this Patriots' season ends. Many fans remain vocal that they want the highest draft pick possible for a quarterback or a receiver because they're ready to move on from Mac Jones and build around someone else. Others still want to see the team win no matter what and are focused on the current task at hand, not what may or may not happen over the next nine games.

Regardless of your preference, it's wild to see there is a chance a team that has historically picked last or close to it for twenty years to have a top-five pick come next April.
