Patriots focus on improving the defense in new 7-round mock draft
By Rhys Knott
Round 7, Pick No. 231 – Dominique Hampton (S, Washington)
The consensus is his “mental errors” will lead to him going undrafted, but one Sports Illustrated analyst believes Hampton is a fourth-round talent. So, if they could pick him up with their last pick, it would be a bonus.
The “mental errors” seem more like losses of discipline due to his desire to use his ability in pass coverage. He can sometimes try to ball hawk when he could just cover the intended pass catcher instead.
But with Kyle Dugger, Jabril Peppers, and Jaylinn Hawkins imparting some wisdom, he should settle down pretty quickly.
Hampton was named the most outstanding special teams player in 2021 and played over 500 special teams snaps in college. He’ll add value to the special team's unit, even if he doesn’t graduate into an important player on the defensive unit.
