Patriots are finally considering big change fans have been begging for
When Tom Brady left the Patriots in 2020, the team decided to implement changes to start the new post-Brady era, which included altering the home game uniforms. What had become standard over the last two decades, the navy jersey with silver pants, was becoming a thing of the past.
Instead, the team decided to use the color rush uniforms as inspiration and utilize the navy jersey on navy pants as the new home uniform.
The change was not well received by the fans, or even some former players, mainly because most did not like the color rush uniforms to begin with. But despite their vocalized disdain for the new look, the Patriots have kept the navy on navy attire for the last four years.
Fortunately, that might not be the case this upcoming season.
The Patriots have reportedly discussed bringing back silver pants to their home uniforms
According to ESPN and Patriots reporter Mike Reiss, the team has discussed this offseason the return of silver pants this season, whether for a specific game or multiple games. It could be treated like their special throwback jersey games, but the plans are not yet clear.
"The Patriots have had internal discussions about possibly wearing silver pants (instead of the standard blue) for a game(s), which would give its game-day uniform a different look. But there is no confirmation at this time when/if it will happen. Also, as expected, the team plans to wear throwback jerseys during the 2024 season, with an announcement on a specific game(s) to come in the future."
It might not be solid plans, but knowing there have been conversations about bringing back the beloved silver pants is a move in the right direction for fans. It's not just because they have a nostalgic look but because the uniform is instantly better with the contrast between the jersey and pants.
It was the standard uniform when Jerod Mayo was suiting up with the Patriots during his career, so perhaps that might play a part in the decision to bring them back.
It will be interesting to see what happens, especially if they are only brought back for a few games. It seems odd to only use them on special occasions, but maybe the organization wants to use those as a test to see the fans' response. However, they should know by now that most of them have long been demanding the return of the silver pants, so they'll immediately embrace the change.
