Because the Patriots were (and still are) not expected to be a very competitive team in 2024, they have been the subject of most trade proposals by NFL analysts throughout the offseason. That remains the case even as the season has begun, with the focus of the hypothetical scenarios sending their best defensive talent to new teams for coveted draft capital in return.

It began with proposals involving pass rusher Matthew Judon before he was inevitably traded, and some even included safety Jabrill Peppers in hopes of receiving quality offensive talent to boost a depleted roster.

But the inclusion of the Patriots' most talented defenders doesn't stop there. Cornerback Jonathan Jones is now being thrown into the mix, and while that may have been a possibility before the season began, his Week 1 performance should end all proposals.

While trading away a player of Jones' caliber would likely yield a high draft pick that the Patriots and the fans would love to add, especially since the goal of the new regime appears to be building the roster through the incoming classes, his veteran leadership and mentorship of the young cornerback room and his consistent production is more invaluable than what could be sent back in a trade.

Any and all trades involving Jonathan Jones should be ended after his Week 1 performance

Although Christian Gonzalez's performance in shutting down Ja'Marr Chase has been the conversation regarding the Patriots' secondary, Jones' highly-graded showing is nothing to overlook when reflecting upon the matchup with the Bengals.

He earned the second-highest grade among all cornerbacks by PFF, an impressive feat that likely nobody could have predicted heading into Week 1, and has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is one of the best players on the Patriots roster yet again.

It might be just one good game to start the new season off, but this isn't anything new for the versatile cornerback. He has been a mainstay of the Patriots' secondary since he signed with the team in 2016 and has made up some of their best cornerback duos during that time.

That appears to be what's happening this year, too, with Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones both back in the lineup after suffering season-ending injuries last year.

With Jonathan Jones leading the group, the Patriots could be back to having one of the best cornerback rooms in the entire league, which is far too valuable to a team hoping to maintain a dominant defense to just trade him away for future draft picks.
