Knowing the Patriots would select a quarterback with the third overall pick in the draft earlier this year, most crossed their fingers for a late trade back into the first round for a top-of-the-class wide receiver. It was two of the weakest positions on the offense, and both desperately needed to be addressed.

Fortunately, that's the route the new regime took.

After attempting to trade back into the first round failed, the Patriots traded back in the second round and eventually selected Washington's Ja'Lynn Polk. He wasn't necessarily the player fans had their eye on, but he was still a highly touted name at the position.

Besides Drake Maye, all eyes were on Polk throughout the summer, and the receiver became increasingly impressive as the weeks went on. Clearly, he had already formed a chemistry with the quarterbacks, including eventually named starter Jacoby Brissett. We saw it during the preseason games, which brought more excitement about his potential in New England.

While his skills and highlight real catches stood out daily on the practice field, another aspect of his performance has gone under the radar. It's a factor that could help put the Patriots' offense over the top, especially with their worrisome offensive line.

Ja'Lynn Polk is proving to be a valuable asset to the Patriots offense

Since summer practices began, Polk has looked like the WR2 on the offense, getting first-team reps alongside DeMario Douglas. He is expected to continue in that role as long as Kendrick Bourne is sidelined and potentially even after the veteran returns.

Part of that could be due to his unique skill set, which has long impressed offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and Jerod Mayo, who gushed about Polk's development with reporters after practice last month.

The head coach pointed out an undervalued asset when evaluating receivers: blocking, which Polk has proven he can be good at. He's talented as a pass catcher and all that comes with playing wide receiver in the NFL, but his toughness and ability to block offensive linemen give him an edge over his teammates.

This could become an even more crucial part of the Patriots offense's success this season, especially if the offensive line continues to struggle. If Polk can be thrown in as extra help on the line to help further a play or two, he might be one of the best draft picks by New England in a handful of years.

It will be fascinating to see if the production we saw from him in the preseason can be maintained during a regular season game, with the pressure on and the expectations to perform. Hopefully, it'll be a smooth transition for the rookie and we will see the start of a great new era with Maye at quarterback and one of his top receivers.
