New proposed trade would be beginning of the end for Jerod Mayo's Patriots' tenure
Throughout the entire offseason, the Patriots have been linked to several wide receivers who would immediately become the stars of the developing offense. This is a caliber of player that the team has arguably been missing for many years.
It was apparent that the new regime led by Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf prioritized boosting the offense with their strong pursuit of Calvin Ridley and eventual double-dipping at the position in the draft earlier this year. That was even more clear in their most recent push to trade for Brandon Aiyuk, which they ultimately backed out of due to his alleged lack of interest in New England.
Because their latest effort fell flat, the Patriots continue to be the subject of trade proposals ahead of the upcoming season. With Tee Higgins' future in Cincinnati still unclear and CeeDee Lamb starting a holdout in Dallas, the team has more options to consider if it wants to add more talent to the roster.
But with those trade proposals comes some pretty bad suggestions, with one of the latest being a surefire way for Mayo to accelerate the end of his Patriots tenure.
New proposed trade would be the ultimate disaster for Jerod Mayo's Patriots career
Since the focus has shifted from Higgins to Lamb, the Patriots are one of the teams consistently mentioned as potential suitors for the 25-year-old. The Cowboys have been reluctant to hand out an extension for their top receiver, so a potential trade continues to be a possibility.
With that in mind, plenty of proposals have been discussed over the past two weeks surrounding the Patriots and how they could finally acquire the receiver of their dreams. While it would be incredible to land a player of Lamb's caliber, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report's latest trade proposal would be a horrific deal for New England to get that done.
The first issue with the proposal is the amount of draft capital the Patriots are expected to give up for Lamb. He's a very talented player and could arguably be considered one of the best in the league, but three draft picks plus a wide receiver all for just one player in return seems like a hefty haul.
Not to mention, the Patriots are projected to have a losing season in 2024, meaning their draft picks will be higher than they typically have in the past, especially their 2025 first-rounder. Adding a third-round pick next year and in 2026 would be an absolute robbery by Dallas, making Mayo and Wolf's decision more than questionable.
To make matters worse, throwing in rookie Javon Baker doesn't make much sense since the Patriots drafted him, and he has been consistently productive through spring and summer practices.
Although Lamb is a much more coveted player, Baker is unproven and has a high ceiling, so deciding to trade him away before seeing all that he can do would be a crazy idea.
