As the Patriots prepared to take on the Bengals in their Week 1 matchup, one of the biggest concerns continued to surround the state of the offensive line. Sidy Sow was dealing with an injury sustained during the preseason, and the coaching staff was still experimenting with who would make up the starting group, which was not ideal as the regular season was about to begin.

It was a consistent weak spot throughout the offseason despite the several players either signed or drafted to improve the vital unit.

The group they went with to start the game last week didn't last too long, with Chukwuma Okorafor struggling as the starting left tackle, forcing Mayo to pull him from the lineup. He was then replaced by Vederian Lowe, who didn't fare too well in 2023 but held it down well enough against Cincinnati's defense to remain in the game the rest of the afternoon.

Alongside Lowe was rookie guard Layden Robinson, a fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M who hadn't been discussed much in the months leading to the season opener.

However, his work ethic and performance against a formidable team like the Bengals prompted a lot of praise from coaches and teammates, and Robinson's game tape proved he could develop into an anchor on the offensive line in the years ahead.

Because of that, his addition to the Patriots injury report earlier this week creates a potentially significant issue come game time, especially since the Seahawks' defensive line is one of the best groups in the entire league.

Patriots hit unavoidable speedbump ahead of Week 2 matchup with Layden Robinson injury

A solid performance last week brought high hopes for Robinson as the season continues despite the likelihood of a significant mismatch lining up against defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

Although that could get really ugly really quickly, the rookie handled himself well against a Bengals defensive line that isn't worthy of being dismissed. That's partly what makes the news of him dealing with a shoulder injury much more concerning, even if he feels he should be good to go come Sunday.

Hopefully, that's the case, and Robinson will be on the field because otherwise, the offensive line will likely be the reason the Patriots have no chance of winning this game.

It's good to hear he's feeling good and, like Mike Reiss said, barring an unexpected change in his injury, should be ready to go. Robinson's presence will become increasingly important as the season progresses, with such big question marks still surrounding the left tackle position.

The progress and experience he will gain will only make him better, and based on what those who work closely with him have said, he will be a star in no time as a starting guard.
