Decision Time: Is Mac Jones a better option than these 5 quarterbacks in 2024?
By Ryan Heckman
5. Gardner Minshew
Wouldn't it be just like Bill Belichick to go the unorthodox route? And, if you're looking for an unorthodox quarterback, look no further than Gardner Minshew. Everything about the guy is exactly that, whether it's the hair, the. mustache or the way he plays the game in a reckless abandonment type of style.
After this season with the Indianapolis Colts, Minshew will be a free agent. And, if the Patriots don't want to draft a quarterback just yet and give Jones some competition, Minshew could be a great option. He isn't a big name veteran that will come in and deflate Jones' confidence, but rather someone who could provide some healthy competition throughout the summer months and training camp.
This year, so far, Minshew has done a decent job filling in for the injured Anthony Richardson. He's thrown for 1,721 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts. Those numbers also include a pair of 300-yard games, mind you.
If the Patriots want to get a bit more vertical in their offensive style of play, Minshew could be a good fit. He certainly isn't afraid to air it out. But, that also means New England needs to find themselves some guys who can be threats down the field and stay healthy doing so. In the end, if it came down to these two guys, my money would be on Minshew to win the job.
Verdict: Minshew
