Josh McDaniels could end up back with the Patriots as soon as 2024

If the current Las Vegas Raiders' head coach fizzles out in 2023, he could find himself back with the Patriots yet again

It's safe to say that Josh McDaniels has not proven himself to be a competent NFL head coach. Could the long-time Patriots' OC find himself back with the team as soon as the 2024 season? I am not entirely sure what the Raiders did this year to make themselves better, and with them being in a very tough division, I think there is a distinct possibility that the team fires McDaniels, which would leave him needing a new coaching home.

There is nothing wrong with Josh McDaniels not being head coach material in the NFL. Most coaches in the NFL never get to sniff a HC job, and McDaniels is on his second. His first one came all the way back in 2009 with the Denver Broncos. He went 8-8 in his first year and was fired in 2010 after a 3-9 start.

McDaniels' tenure in Denver was a total disaster, but he then eventually returned to the Patriots and again served as their OC, earning another head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. In his first year in Vegas, McDaniels went 6-11 and finished third in the AFC West. Their offense was quite efficient, but a poor defense and some overall poor coaching was their downfall.

In 2023, the team decided to dump QB Derek Carr and sign an inferior QB in Jimmy Garoppolo, so I think they got worst on paper offensively. Defensively, I don't really think they got much better, and their secondary is still quite an eyesore on paper. Honestly, the Raiders appear to be a distant fourth in the AFC West and not exactly a team that is going to win a ton of games in 2023.

Well, if that is the case and Josh McDaniels does get fired at some point next year, wouldn't it make sense for him to return to the New England Patriots in some role? He's been most successful in the NFL with the organization and likely has strong ties to the area as well. I'm not sure what role he'd assume if Bill O'Brien continues to serve as the offensive coordinator beyond 2023, but Josh McDaniels may just have to accept that he is not head coach material in the NFL.
