The entire Patriots team finally reported for training camp on Tuesday morning after rookies began their summer practices last week. There was a lot of focus on the attendance from veterans, mainly Davon Godchaux and Matthew Judon, who are both looking for contract extensions this offseason.

There was a belief that one or both players could hold out since they've made it clear that they would like to be paid. However, Jerod Mayo quickly addressed the situation by revealing that the defensive pillars were present at the start of the training camp, which was a positive development in what could have been a chaotic situation for the new regime.

Not much has been said about the negotiations between Godchaux and the team on an extension, despite his consistent performance since signing with the team in 2021, and the updates regarding Judon's status have been far from optimistic.

The pass rusher made headlines over the weekend by reposting a proposed trade that involved sending him and a second-round pick to the 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk, seemingly signing off on being traded rather than re-signing with the Patriots.

Whether that was how Judon felt about the trade is uncertain, but an update provided by Mayo during his Tuesday morning press conference seems to hint that may not be the case.

Contract discussions are ongoing between the Patriots and Davon Godchaux and Matthew Judon

Because the extensions for Godchaux and Judon are on nearly every Patriots fan and reporter's mind, how the conversations have progressed to keep them in New England was one of the first questions Mayo was asked at the start of his presser.

The head coach reiterated their importance to the team while also sharing his desire to see them both extended beyond the 2024 season, a sentiment he believes Eliot Wolf shares.

"Look, the relationship is still good, at least from my perspective. I know their teammates definitely respect them. Those are valuable pieces of this organization, and they’ve done a lot for us. And hopefully, we can get something done, and those guys are here. I want them here. I think Eliot wants them here. The team wants them here. There is a business aspect to everything, though."

Everything sounded good until that last sentence.

It's certainly a positive update, considering the rumors that have flooded the internet since spring practices, and it's great to hear there is an internal desire to see Godchaux and Judon reach an extension agreement. However, the "There is a business aspect to everything, though" is a little disappointing regardless of its truth.

It would be ideal to keep both veterans around to maintain consistency on defense and ensure they remain dominant as much as possible, both of whom have been significant parts of that effort over the last three years.

The hope is that the deals are done sooner rather than later, not only to ensure that they will undoubtedly play this season but also to remove any potential distraction the ongoing (or lack thereof) negotiations might create.
