Drake Maye looks like the Patriots starting QB against Eagles in preseason Week 2
The Patriots' approach to their second preseason game against the Eagles on Thursday night was expected to be different than the week before. According to Jerod Mayo, Drake Maye would see far more action than the six snaps against the Panthers.
It was a disappointing NFL debut for the third overall pick, but Mayo lived up to his words and put the rookie in at the start of the second quarter and boy, has he already impressed.
Despite the weather playing a part in the game, much like last week, the offense overcame it and thrived with Maye under center, which he so elegantly showed with a great throw to fellow rookie Javon Baker on third down.
That woke up the fans in attendance and got them excited for what was to come, which eventually became a matching field goal to tie.
Maye then made an even bigger impression on his next drive by bringing the offense all the way to the red zone and scoring the first touchdown of the game with his legs. It's a part of his game that he became known for during his time at UNC, and it will be a welcomed change for the Patriots offense, which has typically had a pocket passer under center.
The touchdown brought on a tremendous reaction from the fans, almost as if the stadium was filled to the brim. And by the end of the first half, Maye finished with 5/7 receptions for 47 yards, 10 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
He is expected to play into the third quarter, and then rookie Joe Milton III will take over quarterback duties until Bailey Zappe is then thrown in.
