Davon Godchaux reveals unknown details about extension talks with Patriots
The Patriots kicked off the 2024 offseason with the unexpected decision to move on from Bill Belichick and promotion of Jerod Mayo as his successor. It was the first move in a team-defining offseason with a new coaching staff, a new front office, and several crucial additions to the team's roster.
Of course, the most notable is Drake Maye, whom the Patriots selected with the third overall pick in this year's draft.
In addition, the new guy calling the shots regarding contracts, Eliot Wolf, has been on a mission to extend some of the team's most talented players over the last few years, including Christian Barmore, Kyle Dugger, and Mike Onwenu.
There are also a couple of players who deserve that treatment, like Matthew Judon and Davon Godchaux. Both will be on the final year of their contracts this fall, and they have each made it clear they want to remain with the team long-term.
But until this week, we had only heard Judon address the situation since he skipped OTAs and was a limited participant in minicamp. That changed this week when Godchaux took to social media to answer a question about extension talks with the Patriots, revealing a lot of previously unknown information regarding the progress of negotiations.
Davon Godchaux gets honest about contract negotiations with the Patriots
Godchaux has made it apparent that he's looking for a new contract. He has not been present for any offseason activities, including mandatory minicamp, which means he will likely be fined for his absence.
It wasn't entirely unexpected for the nose tackle to make a statement by not showing up, however. He's already made all the guaranteed money from his contract, so it was only a matter of time before he started a holdout in hopes of getting an extension.
But according to Godchaux, those talks don't seem to have taken place just yet, despite his desire to retire in New England and the impressive production he's consistently contributed since signing with the team in 2021.
"Hopefully we can get something done that’s fair to me and my team before camp starts! I love NE, I would love to retire here but it’s has to make sense for us! What I do on the football field in the trenches most of time doesn’t show on the stat sheet but turn on the film you will see it if “U know” ball! Would love to finish my career here in NE but it has to make sense to me and my team! 🙏🏽💪🏽,"
Along with the reveal that not much is happening on the extension front, Godchaux's comments also confirm that he likely won't attend training camp until a deal is done.
It's entirely in his right to do so, and given how integral he has become to the Patriots' defensive line, they should be doing all they can to keep him on the team. Based on how Wolf has handled the offseason thus far, it seems like it will be coming sooner rather than later, but it's not a great sign that those talks haven't begun yet.
