Davante Adams gifts Patriots another chance to trade for a clear, top-tier WR
After attempting to persuade two top wide receivers to come to New England for the 2024 season and failing to do so, the Patriots might have another opportunity on their hands after the latest news regarding Davante Adams.
Things have been tense for the wide receiver with the Las Vegas Raiders since the team decided to get rid of Derek Carr, one of Adams' former college teammates, and it doesn't appear it has gotten better since the start of the 2024 season.
A testy press conference from head coach Antonio Pierce, seemingly implying he took issue with specific players' attitudes and performances in their Week 3 loss, resulted in a few potentially being health scratches the following game, one of whom was Adams.
Although he was listed to have a shoulder injury, rumors suggested it wasn't bad enough to miss the game and was more about Pierce punishing players from the previous game. Regardless of the truth, tensions have reached a boiling point, as NFL insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport revealed Adams has asked to be traded on Tuesday, opening the door for the Patriots to get on the phone.
Third time might be the charm for the Patriots to acquire a top-tier WR1
The failed pursuit of Calvin Ridley in free agency, who ultimately chose to sign with the Titans, and the eventual taking their trade proposal off the table for Brandon Aiyuk, who signed an extension with the 49ers after all that drama, the Patriots could now turn their attention to Adams.
He was a name that was discussed during free agency through the preseason as a potential trade target, given his frustration with the team over the past two seasons, but the naming of Pierce as the Raiders new head coach seemed to put things at ease for the time being.
Clearly, that's no longer the case and Adams is looking for a new home, which could be in New England.
While he doesn't fit the mold of what the Patriots liked in Aiyik and Ridley, Adams is still one of the best receivers in the league. A six-time Pro Bowler, he has proven he can work with virtually any quarterback. That could significantly boost the Patriots' receiving corps and help Brissett with the issues he's been having with moving the ball down the field.
It's not an ideal destination, though, which might be a problem in their pursuit. But Eliot Wolf has made it clear they're willing to spend money to acquire the receiver talent they want, so it's fair to assume they would go all out for Adams if they are interested in acquiring him.
