Could the New York Jets pursue another major QB trade if Aaron Rodgers is done?
The New York Jets might have just lost QB Aaron Rodgers for the 2023 NFL season. Could the team pursue another major quarterback trade to keep their season alive? Well, this is interesting. After just a handful of snaps under center for the Jets, Rodgers went down with what appears to be an Achilles injury.
This is a major, major blow for the Jets, who may just have to rely on Zach Wilson, which is not ideal. Zach Wilson is not an NFL starting quarterback and is definitely not someone the Jets can continue to rely on to lead this team. Being that the Jets went all-in this offseason, it wouldn't make sense for them to at least not try to upgrade their QB situation if Rodgers is out for the year.
The Jets did make out out of Week 1 with a win, which really paints a bad picture for the Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen threw three interceptions, and the Bills just don't feel like a true contender this year. Anyway, back on the Jets. They made a ton of moves in free agency to put the finishing touches on their roster.
So, what do the Jets do here? Well, I think there is reason to believe that Joe Douglas, the GM, is going to sniff around the trade market to see what is still out there, if anything is. Could a retired QB be coaxed out of retirement? There was a report that Philip Rivers could have come out of retirement last year for the San Francisco 49ers had they made the Super Bowl.
Well, Jets' OC Nathaniel Hackett worked with Blake Bortles when they were both with Jacksonville. Could Bortles come out of retirement? Is Rivers a realistic option? What about Ryan Tannehill? Could the Titans be willing to deal the veteran and just hand the keys to Will Levis early? What about Kirk Cousins? Could the Vikings be willing to deal their QB in a year that they surely won't win 13 games again?
Maybe Douglas will shoot for the stars here and offer a nice package for Kyler Murray, who surely won't be back with the Arizona Cardinals in 2024, right? Arizona might be in line to draft Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft if they earn the #1 overall pick. There are just so many different scenarios and paths that the Jets can take.
It will be interesting to see how the New York Jets go forward with Aaron Rodgers likely being out for the entire season. I would not count them out making another huge move.
