5 linebackers the Patriots should consider drafting
By Rhys Knott
Tommy Eichenberg - Ohio State
Eichenberg isn’t exactly an under-the-radar prospect; he played for Ohio State for five seasons, and his brother is a Miami Dolphin. He was also named the Big Ten linebacker of the year in 2023!
Eichenberg captained the Buckeyes for two seasons and was also a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, so everyone knows how good he is. The surprising thing about Eichenberg is that he’s just 6 feet 2 inches tall because he looks much longer when taking on blockers.
He looks like a defensive end when he rushes the passer, but he plays like a defensive back when defending passes. His closing speed to get to the ball or the receiver as they catch it is very impressive. He ran a 4.69-second 40-yard time, so he’s not Jacobs fast. But his experience and burst mean that he doesn’t travel far to make a tackle anyway.
