2023 New England Patriots final 53-man roster tracker
As the final day of roster cutdowns looms, with teams needing to be down to 53 players by August 29th, the Patriots began making moves early Sunday afternoon.
Most of the names thus far have not been surprising, but Bill Belichick did sign off on a trade in the midst of it all.
As the week continues and the Patriots make more moves, this page will be updated with the latest information regarding the roster and will eventually include the players selected to be on the practice squad for the 2023 season.
TRADES:
In a move that wasn't totally unexpected, the Patriots traded 2022 fourth-round running back Pierre Strong Jr. to Cleveland for offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
Wheatley has been with the Browns since signing with the team in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad and was eventually signed to a futures contract with the intention of making the 2023 roster.
It was a move needed by New England, as their offensive line continues to be an issue. But Wheatley has yet to play in an NFL game, which makes the trade a bit more risky. But he did receive terrific grades by PFF from his performance in the preseason, including 86.1 overall (4th best in the NFL among all tackles) and a 95.6 run blocking grade, which is second among all offensive linemen.
Those grades also make him the best performer of all linemen on the Patriots throughout the preseason, which is certainly a plus.
UPDATE: 8/27/2023
Belichick wasn't done for the night, as he traded a sixth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for offensive lineman Vederian Lowe.
UPDATE: 8/29/2023
After trading up in the 2023 draft to acquire both a kicker and punter, the Patriots make it clear that rookie Chad Ryland won the kicker battle as they traded veteran Nick Folk to Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon.
