Patriots would create more wide receiver woes by signing 5-time Pro Bowler

At the start of this year's free agency period, there was strong urgency among Patriots fans for the team to address its receiving corps early and often, particularly with a difference-maker the team was mostly lacking last season. Stefon Diggs filled his role nicely, but now that he's been cut, they need to replace his production and leadership, so that another veteran would be ideal.

On top of that, a player that will dominate opposing defenses is exactly what they need, and while Romeo Doubs was a solid addition, he doesn't fit that definition just yet.

Someone who does is Tyreek Hill, a five-time Pro Bowler who spent most of the 2025 season on injured reserve after suffering an ACL injury. He was eventually cut by the Dolphins and is now a free agent, and many believe the Patriots should pursue him.

While he would certainly be a high-caliber upgrade from what they have on the current roster, as he did record 81 catches for 959 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, he's far too risky for Mike Vrabel and Co. to consider, even if he would be the biggest name they've had on the offense in a long time.

The Patriots can't seriously consider signing Tyreek Hill in free agency

With the first week of free agency completed, more analysts are suggesting the Patriots go after some of the top names who remain available. As for receivers, that's Hill by a mile, but if Vrabel wants to stick with the culture he's trying to establish in Foxboro, then he certainly doesn't fit in.

From his off-the-field drama, some of which includes ugly allegations, to his behavior on the field during his time with the Dolphins, there's not a lot to like about bringing him to the Patriots.

He would certainly be productive and give Maye the best weapon he's had to work with so far in his career, but it would be fair to say that it wouldn't be a long-term fit given his age and the chance that things would fall apart just as they have with the Chiefs and Dolphins.

The same was assumed to happen with Diggs, and although he's not on the team anymore, it isn't because of how he conducted himself or a lack of effort on the field, so the two are not comparable.

Instead, the Patriots will have to sign a different veteran still waiting in free agency or pivot their focus to the draft, just as they did last year.
