New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte's name has quite literally been circulating in trade rumors for months. No deal has materialized despite documented interest in his services, yet he suddenly profiles as an intriguing lifeline for the Houston Texans.
Texans second-year wideout Jayden Higgins reportedly suffered a torn ACL in a joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders (h/t Ian Rapoport of NFL Network). He will now miss the entire upcoming season. It's an absolutely devastating blow to their offense — one they can try to weather the storm with Boutte.
The drumbeat on Higgins' development had been one of Houston's biggest offseason storylines. He was primed to serve as their No. 2 target and take a significant step forward following a quietly solid rookie showing. His growing connection with signal-caller C.J. Stroud was a consistent talking point, but we'll have to wait until 2027 to see them in action.
Alas, Higgins is suddenly out of the picture. His college and Texans teammate, Jaylin Noel, is ramping back up from hamstring and right pinkie injuries, per KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson. Then there's Tank Dell, who's still recovering from a devastating and complicated knee issue that dates back to December 2024.
Needless to say, Houston can use all the help it can get behind two-time Pro Bowler Nico Collins, the unquestioned alpha of their passing attack. Enter Boutte, who's buried on a crowded Patriots depth chart and makes for a viable Higgins replacement.
Kayshon Boutte trade suitor falls into Patriots' lap after Texans lose Jayden Higgins to torn ACL
Boutte has emerged as one of Patriots star quarterback Drake Maye's go-to guys over the past two campaigns. However, the additions of three-time All-Pro A.J. Brown and veteran Romeo Doubs have complicated matters, to say the least.
As things stand, Boutte is no better than the fourth or fifth option in Foxborough; why not ship him to Houston? Brown and Doubs were brought in to start on the outside. Slot man DeMario "Pop" Douglas and tight end Hunter Henry handle the work inside and over the middle.
Helping an AFC rival, especially another squad expected to be in the race for conference supremacy, can be a bold choice. It'd be a brutal look for the Pats if they rerouted Boutte to H-Town (or anywhere) and he proves to be the missing piece.
Yet, if Boutte isn't part of the long-term plan in New England, recouping any value for him would be prudent. He's currently on an expiring contract, and there are no signs of an extension coming anytime soon. His age (24) and status as a known commodity could appeal to a contending Texans squad that just lost Higgins for all of 2026.
Across 14 games in 2025, Boutte posted 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns. He established himself as one of the league's better deep threats despite his smaller stature (5-foot-11, 203 pounds).
For what it's worth, Boutte has done his part to block out the noise and speculation. He's shined throughout the Patriots' training camp and given the front office a reason to think twice about moving on from him.
