The New England Patriots and their new additions are getting acclimated to summer camp and preparing for a new season. After their glorious ride to the Super Bowl was derailed by a stronger Seattle Seahawks team, the offseason was devoted to improving.
One position that didn't need upgrading is the starting quarterback, where MVP-in-waiting Drake Maye now enters his third season. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox calls Maye the Patriots' biggest strength, and he's right.
The prolific young passer surpassed his 2024 second-team All-Pro season with an impressive sophomore year in which any thought of a sophomore slump was dispelled early. Maye shook the NFL to its foundations with a 72% completion rate and the league's highest quarterback rating.
Only one errant vote kept him from an MVP award he rightly deserved. In 2026, with an improved cast, he'll be poised to shatter his own impressive passing stats.
Drake Maye is already among the NFL's best quarterbacks
Knox pointed out his views on every NFL team's biggest strengths and weaknesses. His selection of the Patriots' top strength is obvious and no surprise. It's their budding superstar quarterback.
"New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye showed promise as a rookie in 2024, finishing the season as a Pro Bowl alternate. He fully arrived in 2025, leading New England to Super Bowl LX while finishing as an MVP finalist behind Matthew Stafford. Maye is a legitimate difference-maker in the mold of Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson.
His combination of arm talent, scrambling ability, and improvisational skills allowed New England to have a dynamic offense last season despite having questionable line depth and a limited amount of reliable receiving targets. With A.J. Brown, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Caleb Lomu now in the fold, Maye could be in line for yet another impressive jump."
Knox aptly points out that Maye's 2025 performance was limited by his offensive line's lack of depth and propensity to surrender sacks, as well as the quality of the wide receiver room. The offensive line was bolstered by adding free agent guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who's solid when he plays but has dealt with a long list of injuries in his career.
They also added a great pass-blocker in first-round draft pick swing tackle Caleb Lomu. He was a terrific choice. Regardless, the jury is still out as to how much better the O-line will be.
On the receiving side, however, barring injury, the team definitely upgraded. They first signed solid No. 2 receiver, free agent Romeo Doubs. They then pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Eagles for true No. 1 receiver A.J. Brown.
He and Maye should be one of the NFL's top tandems in 2026, and the unit's depth is solid. Not to be underestimated, the Patriots will also sport one of the NFL's top running back tandems in Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.
If the O-line is indeed improved, produces clean pockets, and allows fewer sacks, Drake Maye will be poised to take the top of the NFL. With an improved wide receiving corps, pinpoint passing, and adept running, the Patriots' offense should rock. He's a top dual-threat quarterback who can sting you not only with his arm but also with his adept scrambles.
It's safe to say that if Maye's protection is materially better, there is no limit to what he and his Patriots might achieve in 2026.
