Throughout the dynasty years in New England, countless players wanted to come to the Patriots to play for head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Working with the best the league had to offer was certainly an opportunity most wouldn't pass on, and that didn't include the near guarantee of winning a Super Bowl.
Since the legends left the team, however, it has become increasingly difficult for the team to get the kind of players they need for their roster to Foxboro. That was particularly true during the 2024 season under Jerod Mayo, which led to one of the worst seasons in nearly 30 years.
The Mike Vrabel era has been entirely different, even before they went on to have one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory, and that continues to draw even more talent to the team.
The last thing longtime Patriots rivals want to hear is that they now have a head coach and a quarterback tandem drawing high-caliber talent back to New England, but that's exactly what is happening heading into the 2026 season.
The Patriots' biggest superstar signing of the offseason just confirmed that, again, and it's difficult not to find joy in knowing that those hoping for the team's downfall are really mad about it.
Kevin Byard just confirmed the Patriots are back in a way the NFL hoped wouldn't be true
During an appearance on SiriusXM Radio this past week, safety Kevin Byard had a lot to say about his time so far with the Patriots, and he couldn't stop heaping praise on Maye for the short time they've spent together.
In fact, he made it clear that players around the league already want to be in Foxboro because of the quarterback, especially since he already "looked phenomenal" in the spring.
"Everybody wants to play in New England because of the quarterback. And I think when you talk about a successful offense, it all starts with him. So I would definitely say he's the most important piece, the most important chess piece that we have there.
I mean, you’re talking about a guy that was a runner-up for MVP, possibly could have won it. … He's an incredible talent. I think he just has a great command for the offense, for his leadership, he's breaking down every huddle. He looks phenomenal. He looked phenomenal in the spring."
From a fan's perspective, it's clear the Patriots made the right decision to draft Maye in 2024, and the Mayo regime deserves a lot of credit for it amid an otherwise forgettable season.
But the latest comments about the quarterback from Byard, along with everything said all offseason, lead to the conclusion that the Patriots have a budding superstar on their hands, and he could be the reason they can assemble very talented rosters for the foreseeable future.
That was a luxury they had during the Brady/Belichick era, and it would be absolutely incredible if they manage to find that again with Maye/Vrabel. It's a big part of what has been missing from their team over the last six years, so if they have finally reached that peak again, it's about time.
The only way to go now is up, especially after reaching the Super Bowl unexpectedly last year, and although expectations are high for 2026, the predictions are not. So we'll have to see if they can continue building on their recent success and prove everyone wrong again.
From what we've seen already, they have the right coaching staff, quarterback, and new additions to the roster, so there is plenty of reason to buy into what the Patriots can do this upcoming season.
