Over the last five years, the Patriots have fallen far down the list of desirable teams for free agents to sign with, primarily due to Tom Brady's departure and, later, Bill Belichick's dismissal. It didn't help that the franchise earned the reputation of being an unfun place to play and unwilling to pay players their worth, deterring the talent the roster has long needed.
That was especially apparent during the 2024 offseason, with new head coach Jerod Mayo and his mostly inexperienced staff. Despite having a significant amount of cap space to spend and plenty of holes on the roster to fix, free agents were not entertaining the idea of becoming a New England Patriot. That meant players who did come to Foxboro weren't the first choice.
Now that the Patriots are entering the 2025 offseason with a new head coach, the most projected cap space to spend, and the fourth overall pick in the upcoming draft, there are many factors working in their favor that should easily attract players looking for a new team.
To some, having money to throw at players might be the biggest selling point, as there are arguments to be made that getting a hefty payday is what most players care about, no matter what team is willing to write the check.
But Eliot Wolf, the Patriots executive vice president of player personnel, believes Drake Maye is another factor that could attract players to the team.

Drake Maye could be the difference maker for the Patriots during a crucial 2025 offseason
During a lengthy conversation with FOX Sports recently, Wolf discussed the rookie quarterback's development throughout the 2024 season and all that he displayed that proves he is the right guy to be the face of their franchise for years to come.
One aspect that stood out the most to Wolf and Maye's teammates was his maturity and natural ability to be a leader, which could play a big role in offensive players looking at the Patriots as their next team.
"It's more than glimpses of talent. The display of talent that he has shown, the maturity to be a leader, the ability to elevate those around him, are things that are going to be huge building blocks for us moving forward."
Wolf furthered that point when asked directly if he felt Maye would make this year's free agency a bit easier. Because of Maye, too, this offseason might be more crucial than last year.
"Yeah, absolutely. Player X from another team is like, ‘Yeah, rookie quarterback, great. You know, we've all seen rookie quarterbacks come in and struggle, so that doesn't really mean a lot now.' Drake's actually playing well. It's on film for everyone to see."
He's not wrong at all, and the fact they finally have a stable quarterback might make the biggest difference for this team this spring, besides having a proven and well-liked head coach. While Mayo was considered a player's coach and highly respected, how the 2024 season transpired likely would have scared players away, even with Maye under center, so the addition of Vrabel is a massive plus.
The hope is that will be the recipe for a successful free agency, especially given how much help the offensive roster needs to put Maye in the position he deserves to lead the team back to relevancy.
