Patriots snubbed in PFF’s top 32 tackles but that might not last long

But things may look a whole lot different in 2026

A recent Pro Football Focus article rated the top 32 offensive tackles in the NFL, "ahead of the 2025 NFL season". Unsurprisingly, none of those noted were members of the New England Patriots. All were veterans (of course).

Now this should come as no surprise whatsoever to Patriot Nation, which saw its offensive line be "offensive" in 2024, including and maybe especially at the tackle position (among others). The O-line was (N)O-line at all. The resulting 52 sacks surrendered demonstrated that quite convincingly.

But that was then, and this is now, as they say, and the dynamics in Foxborough have changed dramatically. The Patriots signed a solid as the Rock of Gibraltar tackle, Morgan Moses, from the New York Jets, no less. He'll man the right side. And they drafted a young man who just happens to be PFF's best offensive lineman and tackle (and the best left tackle) in college football in 2024.

The Patriots' 2025 tackles will change PFF's ratings in 2026

Morgan Moses raises the bar on right tackles in Foxborough

If the question was asked of Patriot Nation, who played right tackle for the Pats in 2024? The quizzical looks would permeate the landscape. The answer would be Mike Onwenu at times, Caedan Wallace, and Dermontrey Jacobs at others. None were very effective.

Onwenu was a solid professional, but he signed a massive contract extension, showed up out of shape, and let the team down. Wallace was thought to be left tackle caliber, and wasn't even right. Jacobs was a waiver wire player and played accordingly. The result was dysfunction on the right.

Now, Mike Vrabel has entered the picture, and one of his first moves was to rectify that situation by signing Morgan Moses. Now, Moses isn't a household name, but he's an NFL veteran, and, as they say in the business, "a professional." Besides being an 11-year veteran who's hardly missed a game since his rookie season in 2014, he's a Pro's Pro.

Moses underwent surgery in the offseason (he played with the injury for much of 2024) but is expected to man the right tackle position when the bell rings against Las Vegas in September. Moses plays. He plays well, and he's an upgrade over anyone who manned the position last season. Advantage goes to Mike Vrabel (and Drake Maye!). Moses may contend for one of PFF's top tackle spots for 2026.

And the new Patriots' left tackle is ... Will Campbell from LSU

The Patriots' left tackle will also be a new addition. In 2024, the position was primarily manned by Dermontrey Jacobs, Caedan Wallace, and Chuks Okorafor, a free agent signee who lasted only two games before departing.

Yet, most of the snaps (73.6 percent) went to Vederian Lowe. The experiment with the former sixth-round pick who was traded to the Patriots for a sixth-round pick went as expected. Lowe played like a sixth-round pick, and Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye paid the price in sacks.

Enter Mike Vrabel, and with the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, he selected Will Campbell, offensive left tackle, LSU. Nothing will ever be the same. Campbell, whose arm and shoulder measurements have been taken to task by NFL Combine-stat-obsessed observers, will play left tackle for the Patriots in 2025. Patriot Nation, be happy, be very happy!

Will Campbell was rated as the No. 1 offensive lineman and the No. 1 tackle in the NFL draft by PFF. By default, it should be noted that he was also the No. 1 left tackle in the 2025 draft. The Patriots needed a left tackle above all else in the 2025 offseason. Mike Vrabel answered that requirement by drafting the best available in the entire NFL draft.

Will Campbell will shatter all the phony, combine-stat-based statistical drivel by his play on the field protecting his quarterback, Drake Maye, in 2025. He'll prove the doubters who cite silly measurements like the want of 3/8" of arm length and so-called "narrow shoulder width" wrong. He will be an instant starter and help the Drake-Maye-led Patriots to the playoffs.

That's the prediction: a playoff run for the Patriots in 2025. In addition to that, the outstanding play of right tackle Morgan Moses and rookie left tackle Will Campbell will also be notable. Both of these players will likely contend for a spot on the 2026 PFF list. As they say, you can measure a man's arms, etc., but you can't measure his heart. Both of these players have the heart of a lion. It makes all the difference.
