Help is officially on the way for the New England Patriots. The team is opening the 21-day practice window for A.J. Brown, who's missed most of the campaign after hurting his ankle in the season opener.
With Mack Hollins also able to return after the next three games, thanks to his stint on IR, the Patriots' wide receiver corps will be back to full strength soon. However, even when undermanned, they did a fine job of keeping Josh McDaniels' offense ahead of the sticks.
That's why, as much as some fans want to see the team make a splash move, they shouldn't pursue another pass catcher right now. That's especially true of Jerry Jeudy, likely the biggest name potentially available for a trade.
The Patriots should want no part of trading for Jerry Jeudy
Jeudy's days with the Cleveland Browns might be coming to an end, but that doesn't mean the Patriots should want him in Foxborough, and not just because of the $17.5 million still remaining on his contract.
The former first-round pick couldn't live up to the hype in Denver with the Broncos, and he hasn't been much better in Berea. Outside of a couple of solid games with Jameis Winston at the helm, he hasn't been much of a WR1.
Granted, the Patriots already have a WR1 so that they wouldn't need him in that role, but why bother? We're talking about a guy who's fallen behind two rookies in the pecking order and has been a non-factor in four of five games.
Jeudy might be quiet now, but he's also had character and coachability issues in the past. That won't fly with coach Mike Vrabel, and it's definitely not the vibe the Patriots want in the locker room, especially for a player who won't be worth the hassle.
Drake Maye has done well in recent weeks, and he's coming off a game with passes to nine different receivers en route to his second career 300-yard game. Five receivers had at least 40 yards, so maybe they're not doing as badly as people thought.
Jerry Jeudy is only 27, so he might still turn his career around and become a late bloomer. That said, he won't get that opportunity in New England, and if the Patriots are about to make a move, they might as well bring in some help at a position of need.
