The New England Patriots have one of the best quarterback situations in the league, and it may only be getting better.
Last season, former No. 3 pick Drake Maye established himself as one of the league's premier talents and best quarterbacks after finishing second in MVP voting. In just his second season, Maye finished with a 72% completion rate, 258.5 yards per game, 35 total touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.
While he didn't play much, Josh Dobbs backed up Maye, finishing the season 7/10 for 65 yards. This offseason, Dobbs was released in favor of Tommy DeVito, the former Giants quarterback that the team claimed off waivers before the 2025 season. DeVito signed a two-year extension with the team this offseason.
In order to fill the QB3 role, the Patriots selected Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton in the seventh round this year. The 234th pick spent five seasons with the Red Raiders, and while most analysts had already written him off as a practice squader, the tides may be changing in Patriots camp.
Behren Morton may be making a push for the QB2 role over Tommy DeVito
While it's still early in camp, it appears Morton may be making a push for the QB2 role. Evan Lazar recently reported that the rookie is outsnapping the veteran early on, after DeVito struggled with accuracy over the first few days.
During his time in Lubbock, Morton struggled with injuries but was a generally accurate passer. He finished his career with a 62.8% completion rate, a figure that rose each year from 2021-2025. Last season, that rate reached 66%, while he averaged his career-high yards per attempt (8.4).
DeVito likely still has a firm grip on the backup role given his contract and NFL experience, but poor performances could open the door for Morton. In his career, DeVito has a 65.3% completion rate, with 9 total touchdowns and 3 interceptions. However, he didn't take a snap last year and has only 12 career games under his belt.
Given that DeVito was the clear QB2 during the spring, this change in power seems likely to be temporary. However, if Morton continues to gain experience and build strong practices during the summer, he could surpass DeVito as the No. 2 sooner than we think.
