One of the most important holes the New England Patriots needed to fill in the 2026 offseason was at edge position. A lingering injury to Harold Landry III and the loss of 2025 solid edge K'Lavon Chaisson in free agency left the position in need.
They've had mixed results. Free agent signee Dre'Mont Jones hasn't made much of an impact, and Landry hasn't seen much time due to knee issues. Yet one addition is already making waves. It's second-round draft pick DE Gabe Jacas.
On that note, Bleacher Report has good news: they recently released their list of the NFL's 99 best rookies for 2026 after Week 4. A familiar name appears on their list.
They ranked Jacas No. 6 overall. That's welcome news and due recognition this early in the young edge's NFL career.
New England Patriots' Gabe Jacas has the makings of a Pro-Bowler
The 6'4", 261-pound Jacas has begun to justify his lofty status as a second-round pick after a rather tumultuous beginning to his professional career. He held out for most of the early offseason and didn't sign his first contract until July 25, 2026.
Regardless, Jacas is already showing why he was worth a trade up from the 63rd to the 55th pick in the 2026 draft. The Patriots traded their own 63rd pick, a fourth-rounder, and a sixth all in 2026 for the privilege.
Jacas is already demonstrating why, contract squabble and all, he was worth the heavy freight. He has notched 14 total stops, with 2 tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, a pass defended, 1.5 sacks, and an interception in his first four games. And he's just getting started.
As the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed wrote in August, Vrabel gave Jacas no slack in trying to get him ready for the season.
"Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is not treating rookie outside linebacker Gabe Jacas with kid gloves. And that includes Vrabel’s messaging about Jacas to the media. Vrabel hasn’t been afraid to openly criticize the 2026 second-round pick since he signed his rookie contract on the first day of training camp and was activated off of the non-football injury list a week later."
Watching Jacas makes one thing clear: with his size and strength, he already challenges NFL offensive tackles. Jacas's bull rush is punishing, and it's only a matter of time before Vrabel's coaching on technique turns him into the Patriots' next great sack producer.
For certain, the team needs him to be just that. With Landry, the team's best sack artist, still on the shelf, and Jones delivering only three total stops- a tackle for loss, one sack, and four quarterback hits- in his first three games, Jacas will be called upon early and often to make a difference.
The future looks bright for former Fighting Illini edge rusher Jacas. He needs the strong coaching he's getting from Vrabel, and he'll have to learn his trade as he accumulates more experience. One thing is clear: he's already a handful for offensive linemen, and the sacks will follow in short order.
It's exactly what the Patriots defense needs to make another run for the playoffs in 2026.
