The discourse around the Patriots' 2026 offseason has been vastly different from just one year ago, mostly centered on the excitement surrounding the players signed in free agency and selected in last month's draft.
Part of that can be blamed on less money available to spend and falling lower on the draft board after a season that ended in the Super Bowl. But that doesn't mean there aren't intriguing players to watch during the summer, and that has been a consistent story in Foxboro over the last few years.
During the 2025 offseason, undrafted wide receiver Efton Chism III stole the spotlight and quickly became a fan favorite. Although he didn't see the field much as a rookie, fans have been holding out hope that will change this fall, now that he has a year under his belt.
While that remains possible, as it is still early enough in the offseason for things to be far from certain, another undrafted receiver is now invading Chism's spotlight and making it all about himself, which doesn't bode well for the returning playmaker.
Efton Chism has an uphill battle this summer to remain on the Patriots roster
The Patriots held their rookie minicamp last week, and although it wasn't an event that boasted many headlines, there were a few players, in particular, who stood out, one of whom was undrafted receiver Kyle Dixon.
He has become the talk of the town due to his performance, with several reporters, including MassLive's Mark Daniels, citing his reliability and athleticism as his most impressive traits, similar to what we heard about Chism last summer.
"During the Patriots’ lone 11-on-11 drill, receiver Kyle Dixon made the biggest impact, finishing with a team-high four receptions. This practice period lasted 11 plays, and the young receiver made several plays downfield, showcasing noteworthy athleticism and reliable hands."
On the surface, this is exactly why signing UDFAs is always a good move, particularly at weaker positions on the roster, because the Patriots have proven time and time again that they have a good eye for talent and find some of the best hidden gems to make a real impact on their team.
The problem, of course, is that if Dixon continues to rise over the next few months, it will make it much more difficult for Chism to make the roster, and it already wasn't looking great to begin with.
Dixon is a bigger player, which works in his favor, and that could be among the traits that push him over the edge if things come down to the wire between him and Chism. There's also a chance that both could carve out roles for themself on the team in some way, maybe even on special teams, so we'll have to see.
Regardless, Chism's immediate future isn't looking as bright as it once was in New England, and that will only remain a story as long as Dixon continues to stand out from the rest.
