The New England Patriots have built a strong defense over the past two seasons. After a 2025 that saw Zak Kuhr's unit finish fourth in PPG, sixth in rushing yards allowed, and ninth in passing yards per game, the group lost just two starters.
The team replaced K'Lavon Chaisson with a stouter, though less athletic, option in Dre'Mont Jones, and swapped Jaylinn Hawkins for three-time All-Pro and 2025 interceptions leader Kevin Byard. Furthermore, they added Gabe Jacas in the second round after trading up.
While the unit arguably improved at the top level, their depth took a hit this offseason. Khyiris Tonga, Anfernee Jennings, Jack Gibbens, Jahlani Tavai, and Marte Mapu were all non-starters who departed this offseason. Tonga, most notably, was not replaced via free agency or the draft.
In the defensive backfield, the team lost Alex Austin and Miles Battle. Both were primarily special teamers, but Austin averaged 36 defensive snaps per game through the first four weeks of 2025, including 63 in Week 1.
The team made additions in free agency, but even the biggest homers had to be pleasantly surprised with the second unit's play on Thursday.
Patriots' backups show out in their second preseason matchup against the Colts
The Patriots' defense is known for its stars, but the depth showed out in their 13-13 tie against the Colts. Kuhr's unit forced four turnovers and a turnover on downs, with several depth pieces impressing.
The defensive line was very effective in garnering pressure, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Joshua Farmer, Leonard Taylor, Eric Gregory, and Jeremiah Pharms were all contributors at different points last season. Isaiah Iton, who spent 2025 on IR, also recovered a fumble. Farmer, Taylor, and Gregory seem most likely to make the team from that group.
Gabe Jacas looked explosive on the edge, while Jesse Luketa landed a big hit on Riley Leonard to begin the second half. Bradyn Swinson had a trio of tackles and batted a ball down on fourth down to force a turnover on downs. For a group that's been heavily scrutinized, the edge depth looked strong.
Chad Muma (three tackles) has risen to be the clear LB3, while Khalil Jacobs played 50 defensive snaps and recorded six tackles. Namdi Obiazor played second fiddle to Jacobs, but he too notched six tackles.
In the defensive backfield, Kindle Vildor had an interception, while Karon Prunty and Channing Canada each had strong games. Canada also made his presence felt on special teams, with kick return duties to his name and a tackle on punt coverage.
John Saunders Jr. had an interception and fumble recovery, putting himself in the conversation for one of the backup safety roles.
A four-turnover game during which the defense holds a former top-five draft pick and National Championship finalist to 13 points and a pair of interceptions is nothing to scoff at. The next two weeks will be key for the backups as they look to push for the final roster, which will be announced on August 30.
