The New England Patriots' decision to release wide receiver Stefon Diggs shouldn't come as much of a shock. However, the move undeniably creates a massive void at an area of weakness, leaving the reigning AFC champions in a tough spot.
It's no secret the Patriots already needed to bring in at least one viable wideout this offseason. Yet, addressing the position properly suddenly vaults to the top of their offseason to-do list following Diggs' unceremonious exit.
Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown has been Patriots fans' dream acquisition, especially because of his strong connection to the club's head coach, Mike Vrabel. Of course, Diggs' departure only intensifies the trade chatter. Nevertheless, regardless of who it is, the objective is clear as day for New England: get franchise quarterback Drake Maye help.
Patriots' urgency to add high-profile WR increases after Stefon Diggs release
New England is armed with their normal allotment of 2026 NFL Draft picks and ample cap space (with room to create more). So, they have the means to not only replace Diggs, but upgrade from him. Brown certainly falls under that umbrella at this stage of their respective careers, though he's far from the only option.
There are several high-profile pass-catchers who could get dealt in the coming months. In other words, the Patriots don't have to put all their eggs in the Brown basket. Brian Thomas Jr. (Jacksonville Jaguars), Jaylen Waddle (Miami Dolphins), D.K. Metcalf (Pittsburgh Steelers) and D.J. Moore (Chicago Bears) are some notable names.
Moreover, there are a handful of free agents the Patriots can pursuit. There are decorated veterans who may see an opportunity to chase a ring, like Tyreek Hill and Mike Evans. New England could also try pairing Maye with a rising young playmaker to continue growing together, whether it be Alec Pierce, Romeo Doubs or Wan'Dale Robinson.
Alternatively, the Pats can bring a rookie into the discussion; this year's class of prospects is deep and loaded with potential. They won't be in play for the top guys, barring any unforeseen changes. That said, Indiana's Omar Cooper Jr., Tennessee standout Chris Brazzell II and KC Concepcion of Texas A&M, among others, figure to be on the board.
Diggs was the only Patriot to clear 100 targets in 2025 en route to franchise's first 1,000-yard receiving campaign since 2019. He also made an impact off the field as a respected locker room leader. New England must not take his departure lightly, and fortunately for them, their organizational trajectory is a great selling point.
As Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official team website highlighted, New England has the "resources and draw to lure a top-flight receiver." Maye's fresh off an MVP runner-up season, Vrabel is beloved league-wide and they have money to spend.
