With the height of roster cuts settling down after waiver wire pickups were made and practice squads were established, the Patriots are still in a position to make more moves before the start of the regular season. Mike Vrabel reiterated that point when speaking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, so there are endless possibilities of what the front office might do.
Although there is still a slim possibility that they pull off a monster trade for Cowboys' elite pass rusher Micah Parsons, a smaller trade would appear more plausible, especially after hearing the news that receiver Jakobi Meyers requested a trade out of Las Vegas.
Because he followed Josh McDaniels there after Bill Belichick chose JuJu Smith-Schuster over him in free agency, there's a good chance he would be interested in returning to where his career started in Foxboro.
The Patriots are considered a frontrunner to acquire him, and it likely won't take much to get a deal done, even if the Raiders claim they have no plans to move Meyers. That could instantly change if New England calls them with the offer Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report suggests.
Jakobi Meyers should be on the Patriots' radar even after the latest receiver cuts
Among the five teams deemed most likely to get a trade done for Meyers, the Patriots are projected to be the easiest one to accomplish it because of their familiarity with the receiver.
They also have the means to get a deal done and even a potential need for him on the offense, which many consider to be too thin at depth, which became even more problematic for the receiving corps after they released Javon Baker and Kendrick Bourne.
Regardless, Gagnon believes a deal could be signed if the Patriots offered a 2026 fourth-round pick, or a later-round selection plus cornerback Alex Austin. The latter would certainly be a better deal for the Raiders, as they receive a pick and a player in return. However, if Mike Vrabel could pull off a deal that only involved a mid-round pick and not rid the roster of a budding star cornerback, that would be the best-case scenario.
That might not be enough to convince Las Vegas that they should move on from Meyers after he recorded his first 1,000+ receiving yard season in 2024. They lost Davante Adams already and only just signed Amari Cooper, after he had been sitting at home as a free agent all offseason.
They know what they have with Meyers, and it would be risky to move on from him after what he's accomplished since joining the team in 2023. But maybe they're interested in acquiring more picks, and the Patriots can convince them they should send Meyers their way.
No matter what happens, there's no reason for Vrabel and Eliot Wolf not to get on the phone and inquire about his availability. He thrived under Josh McDaniels and has only improved since leaving the team a few years ago. So he would be an immediate weapon for Drake Maye to work with, which is exactly what the new regime wants to surround him with during his second season.
