The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft was far more chaotic than anyone expected, and not necessarily in a good way if you're the Patriots. Although they were able to get a player they didn't think would still be on the board for them, they watched their divisional rivals vastly improve their rosters, particularly the Jets, in a way that could become a problem this upcoming season.
That continued in Round 2, even as the Bills snagged one of the top remaining pass rushers many Patriots fans had their eyes on, but it didn't take long for Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf to realize they had to make a move to equal their biggest competitors in the division.
That seems to have emboldened them to take a big swing by trading up with the Chargers to finally land the dominant pass rusher they needed, selecting Gabe Jacas out of Illinois.

He might not be one of the flashiest names in the 2026 class, but Jacas is an immediate game-changer who will bring his impressive athleticism and speed to New England, helping to reshape their defensive identity as Vrabel and Wolf envision.
The Patriots match the Bills by getting their own dominant pass rusher in Round 2
For much of the Bill Belichick era, the defensive line, particularly linebackers and defensive ends, was bigger-bodied and not exactly the fastest on their feet.
That's changing under Vrabel, which is something Wolf emphasized earlier this week, and based on what we know about Jacas, he fits what they're looking for in a Day 1 starter.
“I never want a smaller guy. No, faster guy. I said I never want a smaller guy. Yeah, we could complement our room with some speed. I think that’s evident. Dre’Mont, Harold, Elijah and some of the other guys we have, they all have their skill sets. We would like to get faster. Dre’Mont’s a guy that can play across the line, run games. I mean, he can sneaky beat you with speed, but that’s probably not his bread and butter.
So, that’s an area that we’re looking to try to improve the depth on the roster.”
Not only will Jacas bring the speed element that the defense has been lacking, but he's also strong, as he was a former wrestler. He has the power to help in the pass rush, which is exactly what they need going against some of the more mobile quarterbacks in the league, specifically Josh Allen.
Jacas plays with the kind of violence that Vrabel has emphasized he wants for the Patriots defense, and he can help establish that they're not a group to mess with even more, after a standout 2025 season that made them a top-10 roster.
#Patriots rookie Gabe Jacas was an All-State wrestler in high school and was thought to be the most violent pass rusher in the draft class.
