The New England Patriots have been linked to some interesting big-ticket free agents, but they opened up their offseason with the addition of a little-known edge defender. On Thursday afternoon, the Patriots signed former Penn State edge defender Jesse Luketa.

Luketa, 27, came into the league as a seventh-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. A Canadian national, he was also drafted in the second round of the CFL Draft, but never signed or played up north.

After three years in Arizona, where he played just 367 defensive snaps, he signed with the Rams' practice squad in 2025. He ended up a free agent at the end of the season.

The former Nittany Lion hasn't been much of a contributor on the defensive side of the ball in the NFL. He recorded one half-sack during his time at Penn State, primarily because he moved to the edge only in his final season, playing as a stand-up linebacker for the three years prior. His 4.89 speed indicates that a return to the position is unlikely to yield results.

What might Jesse Luketa's role be in New England?

While his defensive impact has been limited, he was a core special teamer during his time in Arizona, playing 544 snaps across three seasons. For a team that values special teams as much as New England does, Luketa could carve out a role.

Furthermore, while his defensive impact hasn't been his career's hallmark, he recorded 3 sacks in 2025 with a career-low 11.1% missed-tackle rate. Perhaps he could find a role as a special teamer and end-of-the-roster pass rusher with a solid preseason?

Luketa's competition will come primarily from young players. Harold Landry is the only veteran who seems a lock to be on the roster next season, while K'Lavon Chaisson is a free agent, and Anfernee Jennings has been the subject of countless trade and release rumors.

That leaves sophomores Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson as the only other players on the roster who were on the squad last year.

Ponder seems very likely to make the squad after a 4-sack rookie year, but Swinson was a major disappointment after leading LSU in sacks and TFLs in 2024. If Luketa can best him and make his special teams experience known, he has an opportunity to sneak onto the final-53. It might be a long shot, but Luketa making the Patriots' roster in 2026 isn't impossible.
