The 2025 offseason saw many signings to improve the Patriots' roster, resulting in significant spending and a full-team makeover. Mike Vrabel took the job seriously from the start and quickly made his presence known, including taking a few risks with players in key roles.
Although this past year wasn't nearly as eventful, the head coach still took risks that left analysts and fans concerned. Their biggest gripe was the apparent lack of depth in some areas, including at pass rusher, and although Vrabel emphasized his confidence in the group, it was hard to buy into.
It was clear they were going to rely on rookie Gabe Jacas, who didn't join the team until two days into training camp, Elijah Ponder, who hadn't started a single game during his rookie season, and Dre'Mont Jones, a free agent they signed who hadn't been a full-time starter in a few years.
With Harold Landry sidelined by injury, they had a lot of opportunity to make an early impact, and so far, the three defenders, most notably Ponder, have taken advantage of that opening.
In fact, the outside linebacker was just named to Pro Football Focus's NFL Team of the Week for his performance against the Raiders, forcing the Patriots' future opponents to get to know his name now or regret overlooking him later.

Against Kirk Cousins and the Raiders' offense, Ponder was credited with 24 pass rush snaps, resulting in 2 hurries, a quarterback hit, 5 pressures, 2 sacks, a forced fumble, 6 total tackles, 2 for a loss, and 5 defensive stops.
He also recorded a team-high pass-rush win rate and pass-rush grade, further confirming how good he has become for the Patriots this year.
Elijah Ponder is going to become a name for Patriots opponents will remember
Being thrust into a starting role after playing 15 games as a rookie last year doesn't seem like a problem for Ponder, who signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent.
The 24-year-old has been beyond impressive to start the 2026 season, and his performance alongside Jacas has made them a defensive duo to watch, and one that has Patriots fans excited about what their future might look like.
Despite calls for the team to make a trade for a superstar pass rusher, including Maxx Crosby, Khalil Mack, or Josh Sweat, Ponder has been far better than expected and has helped quiet the noise around what was presumed to be a weak position. He's already recorded 19 combined tackles, 6 for a loss, a forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, one returned 19 yards for a touchdown, and 4.5 sacks.
He continues to be ranked among the league's best pass rushers, firmly on the NFL's radar, which means future opponents will have to prepare for how to slow him down when they face the Patriots.
It's a welcome surprise, since edge was considered one of the top-2 weakest positions on the roster going into the season, and even better is knowing that the rest of the league overlooked Ponder's potential, so New England has him on a cheap contract that could easily become a steal in due time.
He has a great chance to become a future anchor of the defensive line if he can maintain this level of play through the rest of the season, and if Jacas can learn and develop alongside him, then they could have a lethal duo on their hands for years to come.
That's something the Patriots have been missing over the last few years, so if they lucked out and found two young players to fill those roles, Eliot Wolf and the scouting department deserve much more praise for what they saw in them.
Ponder still faces tough quarterbacks over the next 12 weeks, such as the Bears' Caleb Williams, the Packers' Jordan Love, and the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes. But based on what we've seen so far, it's easy to be confident that he will keep performing at a high level and impress everyone even more with just how good he is.
That's far from what those quarterbacks want to hear.
