The New England Patriots made a gigantic splash late on Monday night. According to multiple reports, the Patriots agreed to terms with former New York Jets first-round pick Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year, $42 million contract.
Vera-Tucker was one of the top offensive guards available in free agency this year, despite his injury history. Yet, his upside is too high, and the Patriots made sure they could secure him on a lofty commitment.
As it turns out, the Patriots have the New York Giants to thank.
There was buzz on Monday that Vera-Tucker and the Giants would reach an agreement on a contract to keep him in the New York area. However, SNY's Connor Hughes reports that the two sides reached an impasse on the contract length. As a result, Vera-Tucker agreed to terms with the Patriots.
Sources: The #Giants and Alijah Vera-Tucker reached an impasse other the length of the contract. It proved too much to work through, even though there was internal optimism within New York’s building that they could as late as 1030pm tonight.

Giants contract standoff allowed Patriots to sign Alijah Vera-Tucker
The Giants were notably in the market to add some interior offensive linemen to help protect quarterback Jaxson Daas as he enters his second year. Considering that Vera-Tucker was one of the top guards available in this free agent class, it would have been a huge upgrade to the offensive line. But the term was one aspect neither side could agree upon.
With the Patriots offering a three-year contract, it was more than enough for Vera-Tucker to shut down talks with the Giants and make a verbal agreement.
Vera-Tucker was a highly-regarded first-round prospect in 2021 and was expected to be a pivotal piece to the Jets' foundation. The issue with Vera-Tucker was that he caught the unfortunate injury bug. In 2022, Vera-Tucker suffered a torn triceps, limiting him to just seven games.
In 2023, he played in just five games before suffering an Achilles injury. Vera-Tucker missed all of last season after suffering another torn triceps. So in five years in the NFL, Vera-Tucker played in just 43 games. It's not ideal, but the upside is still there.
In 2024, the last time he played, Vera-Tucker allowed just 16 pressures, four sacks, and four hits in 916 total offensive snaps. Those are good numbers for an offensive guard, which makes sense why teams were trying to sign him.
The Patriots needed to bolster their offensive line. That was evident in Super Bowl 60, as quarterback Drake Maye couldn't do much to help the Patriots win, as he faced constant pressure from the Seattle Seahawks' relentless pass rush. It was a true wake-up call that the Patriots still needed to add some linemen if they wanted to add a seventh Lombardi Trophy to their organization.
The Patriots got one of the top interior offensive linemen in free agency, and they got an assist from the Giants, who appeared to be in the driver's seat before fumbling talks.
