The New England Patriots lost Super Bowl LX, and one major reason was their being drubbed in the sack battle by the Seattle Seahawks. They gave up six sacks of star quarterback Drake Maye, while the Seahawks surrendered just one.
That disparity, coupled with three Patriots' offensive turnovers sealed the deal for Seattle.
Patriots' Head Coach Mike Vrabel knew he needed to bolster his offensive line as a top offseason priority, and he did so both in free agency and the draft. In the draft, it was first-round pick Caleb Lomu from Utah, a college left tackle who now, interestingly, is going to get reps at guard, as well as at both tackle spots. It's an underrated yet significant development.
Mike Vrabel is not only the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, but he's also an extremely proficient NFL personnel evaluator. Vrabel realized that his offensive line needed major bolstering, and he set about to do so first in free agency.
An early signing was former NY Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. He's a good player when he's healthy, but he hasn't been for a good part of his first five seasons. If he can stay on the field in 2026, he'll be a difference-maker. If not, Lomu will be ready.
Caleb Lomu is going to be a major factor on the Patriots' offensive line in
Mike Vrabel has confirmed that first-round pick Caleb Lomu will be taking reps at guard as well as both tackle spots this pre-season. While it's not earth-shattering news, it should further ensure Patriot Nation that Vrabel has his finger squarely on the pulse of winning in 2026.

Given Vera-Tucker's propensity to get injured, having competent backups is essential. The top backup guard available is Ben Brown. He's OK as a backup, but he's not at a level necessary to ensure that Maye stays on the field.
Since there's really no one else, Lomu's being prepped to play guard makes a lot of sense in the NFL.
If Vera-Tucker gets dinged up, having the big, talented pass-blocker Lomu ready to step into the breach could be season-saving. Yet, it's now clear that wherever an injury might happen on the offensive line except at center, Lomu will be set to step in.
It's the optimal solution for Vrabel, the O-line, and for his star quarterback, Drake Maye. All of this makes perfect sense for the 2026 Patriots.
