Mike Vrabel spent over 30 minutes at the NFL Annual League Meetings in Phoenix, chopping it up with members of the media and playfully busting chops.
It took a wry smile at times to discern whether a response was meant to be serious, like Vrabel’s playful jab at Eagles coach Nick Sirianni for announcing the teams’ joint practices this summer, or him saying he loves tight ends and would roster nine of them if he could.
He later bombarded Joe Brady’s session with Bills reporters by picking up his nameplate, crumpling it, and tossing it back on the table.
There is a story behind the crumpled-up Joe Brady sign at the NFL Meeting. When Mike Vrabel was leaving the AFC coaches' media breakfast this morning, he walked by the table where his new AFC rival coach was talking, picked up the sign, and mangled it up in full WWE mode, and the… pic.twitter.com/mkaGQd265E

Vrabel’s mood seemed to reflect the fresh start for his franchise entering Year 2 of his now fully established program. There wasn’t a ton of smiling and joshing around after the Patriots left Santa Clara on the wrong side of a 29-13 score to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
So Patriots fans can only guess what Vrabel really meant on Wednesday when he was asked about his team being picked for HBO’s popular training camp series Hard Knocks for the 2027 season.
“Can't wait,” Vrabel responded, before quickly moving on to the next question.
Hard Knocks could give the Patriots a recruiting edge they’ve been missing
It’s possible that Vrabel was just doing his best Bill Belichick impression with that two-word response. He didn’t exactly jump out of his seat with excitement when he said it.
He should definitely be embracing the national attention that comes with the annual NFL Films production, though. The Patriots now have one undeniable draw in quarterback Drake Maye, and after reigniting life in the region this past year, next year’s show will be an excellent chance for Vrabel to showcase not only what he’s building in Foxboro but also the new state-of-the-art practice facility the team just moved into.
The fanbase is already fully bought in. A showcase like this could help turn Foxboro into a major destination for NFL players again, something it definitely hasn’t been since the peak Tom Brady days.
Patriots fans are obviously looking forward to the 2026 NFL Draft, but next year's training camp now can't get here soon enough. Hard Knocks has been a top-rate show for decades, debuting in 2001, the same year the Patriots kicked off their dynasty. The fact that the team has been to 10 Super Bowls since the show first aired, and hasn’t yet been featured, feels like a crime.
It wasn’t just Belichick concealing his state secrets, though. The NFL had strict rules in the past for team selection, with an exemption for those who had made the playoffs the previous season. That left fans seeing teams like the Cowboys, Jets, and Bengals featured in multiple years.
The league has since changed that criteria, with the only notable disqualifier being for teams with a first-year head coach.
This will be a peek behind the curtain for Patriots fans that’s long overdue, and with Vrabel almost guaranteed to throw on shoulder pads and find a way to bloody himself again for the camera, and Maye already on the road to superstardom, it’s hard to find anything negative to say about this news (other than having to wait over a year for that first episode to get here).
