After three weeks of free agency frenzy, the Patriots still have some big moves to make if they really want to upgrade their roster for the 2026 season. They have made the necessary moves so far, but there are still holes that need to be addressed and likely will remain even after the draft.
The most damning of all is their pass rush, particularly after K'Lavon Chaisson left in free agency. He was one of the leaders in sacks last season, and the defense will inevitably have a void in his absence, making the need for a pass rusher more crucial. That's why a free agent like Joey Bosa has popped up on the radar, and he remains unsigned with the draft right around the corner.
Although he doesn't meet many of the criteria Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf have outlined for their roster, he's a proven talent who would certainly improve the defensive line they currently have. He still recorded 16 quarterback hits and five sacks in 2025, albeit far from his best seasons, and that would add a lot to what they currently have on the team.
But there might be a sign that the Patriots shouldn't actively consider him, since he is still available and there hasn't been much made about his market so far. If the rest of the league isn't showing much interest, there has to be a reason.
There's probably a good reason that Joey Bosa is still a free agent
It's probably the same reason New England hasn't made the call yet, and maybe it's mostly because of his age and that he hasn't played a full season since 2017.
He would inevitably bring production to their defensive line and add the pressure on opposing quarterbacks that went with Chaisson to the Commanders, but he's not the same player he once was, and perhaps that has lowered teams' interest.
It's particularly fascinating since he is considered one of the top remaining pass rushers available at this point in free agency, yet we haven't heard a peep about teams calling about signing him.
That could mean a team like the Patriots intends to find their next guy in the draft, which is something Vrabel and Wolf have stressed over the past year, so seeing Bosa's value seemingly plummet shouldn't be of any concern.
However, if there is any potential interest from outside Foxboro, they should take into consideration that teams aren't barging down the door to sign him, and apparently not even inquiring at the very least.
