As this year's draft continues to pass by, the Patriots have started to focus on the defensive side of the ball, with a sprinkle of special teams.

That's exactly what they did with their latest pick of linebacker Namdi Obiazor, who has the athleticism and speed that will be significant for the defensive line, as well as a big role in the third phase of the game.

It was the biggest remaining hole on the roster that they needed to address, and although it could be argued they waited a bit too long to get who they needed, at least we can say that they finally did and with a player who shows a lot of potential.

Patriots add much-needed depth to their linebacker roster with sixth-round pick

During his four years at TCU, Obiazor recorded 302 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, nine pass breakups and three interceptions.

At the end of the 2025 season, he even led his team in tackles with 88 on the year, so his tackling rate will be welcomed with open arms when he arrives in Foxboro.

Although he might not be an immediate starter, there's a clear path to Obiazor to carving a role for himself on special teams. That has been a very inconsistent group in recent years, despite the impressive coaching from coordinator Jeremy Springer, and perhaps that could be where the rookie works out best.

No matter what, Obiazor adds the much-needed depth that the Patriots' linebacker room needed, especially after both Harold Landry III and Robert Spillane dealt with injuries last season that kept them either sidelined or not playing up to their full capacity.

That makes his addition even more exciting, and it'll be fun to see what he can develop into and where he winds up on game day.
