After an unexpectedly impressive performance against the Bills last week in Buffalo, there was some hope that the Patriots would fare well against the visiting Chargers on Saturday. With nothing to lose and finishing the season with back to back home games, it looked like the Patriots could finish the year with another win or two and head into the offseason with more optimism than most of the year.

Unfortunately, it was clear early on that the team we saw play well against the reigning AFC East Champions did not show up to Gillette Stadium this week, and the situation only worsened as the game progressed.

After a decent defensive effort to start, the Patriots couldn't stop Justin Herbert, and the offense did nothing to help Drake Maye outside of one touchdown to DeMario Douglas. The game quickly got out of hand, with a lead of 37-7 in the fourth quarter, which prompted LA to take Herbert out of the game.

With things out of hand and Patriots fans frustrated over the team's effort, loud boos began to be heard and were eventually met with chants that sent Robert Kraft and the organization a clear message regarding how they felt about the state of the team.

Fans in attendance of Patriots vs. Chargers loudly revolt against the team

With another failed offensive drive in the books, many Patriots reporters noted hearing fans chanting an unfavorable sentence to Jerod Mayo. MassLive's Mark Daniels noted the chant after a penalty wiped out another solid play by Douglas, stating that he heard fans chanting, "Fire Mayo!"

Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub heard the same chants, stating they were coming from a group of fans right below the press box, which might have been heard by the Krafts, too.

This is far from a great look for the rebuilding Patriots, with a coaching staff that has been under fire for most of the year. NFL insiders reported the latest regarding their statuses moving forward minutes before the game, with Kraft reportedly wanting to stick with Mayo for the 2025 season, as he understands they're in a multi-year rebuild.

The futures of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and defensive coordinator Demarcus Covington aren't so clear. The same could be said about VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf, especially with Ladd McConkey's stellar performance on full display right in front of them.

It seems obvious that the franchise needs to really take a look in the mirror, and Kraft will have to make some tough decisions this offseason if he hopes the six-time Super Bowl Champions can get back into competitive mode sooner rather than later.

UPDATE:

Reporters asked Mayo about the chants after the game, which he heard, and he seemed to be understanding about their frustration.

Reporters have since asked players about the chants, which they don't seem to be a fan of.
