The Patriots are in the midst of preparing for their toughest battle of the 2025 season so far, as they travel to Buffalo to face the Bills on Sunday Night Football this week. It will be their first big test of the season and a great indication of where they realistically stand as of Week 5 this season. The hope is that they will continue to be the team we saw dominate the Panthers.

That won't be an easy feat, especially since they are only one week removed from a devastating loss that included five turnovers. Moreover, it won't be any easier if one of their best players on defense is unable to play in the game.

There's a chance that will be what they are dealing with this weekend, as Patriots reporters revealed that defensive tackle Milton Williams was not present for practice on Thursday due to an ankle injury.

There have been no updates regarding his status for the game, and Wednesday's practice report stated Williams was limited, which is certainly a positive sign.

However, his absence from practice is not a great development, and if he cannot suit up for Sunday's matchup, the defense will be in a significantly worse position against a very tough offense.

Patriots fans will be holding their breath until Milton Williams returns to practice

Going into this week's game, the Patriots are already considerable underdogs, as they will face off against one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Josh Allen. Not only is he a strong passer, but he is among the best of the best at using his legs to further plays and score touchdowns.

That will require the Patriots' defense to be at their best, especially since they are currently struggling against the run. Having Williams sidelined for a crucial matchup would be devastating and create a massive opportunity for Allen to capitalize on.

There hasn't been much reported about the severity of Williams' ankle injury, and since he was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice, there's fair reason to believe that it's nothing too serious.

But missing a practice ahead of such a big matchup is never a good sign, so Patriots fans will need to cross their fingers and toes that Williams will be good to go on Sunday, or it might be a rougher showing than anyone has prepared for.
