It's hard to get a beat on NFL Insiders sometimes. It's a nice title – they're on the inside! – but then, a lot of times, you read/listen to what they say and it sure sounds a lot like the same speculation that you can find in your own high school buddies group chat.
RELATED: Draft expert says Patriots shouldn't think twice if worst-case scenario happens
Other times, I find that it's best to just take whatever they say an absolutely believe it with all your heart. It's a fun game. For instance, if you're a Patriots fan, you may be happy to hear that Breer thinks it's entirely possible that the team trades back into the first round of this month's draft for another first round pick (!!!). He (briefly) expanded on it during a big ol' mailbag of draft questions that dropped earlier this week.
Albert Breer thinks it's entirely possible the Pats could trade up for another 1st rounder
"I’m not a scout. But in talking to those who are, I’d probably chase the ceiling of Walker, and what he can be as a Swiss Army knife for your defensive front, over Campbell, who is going to be a really good pro—but might be a guard. And Patriot, I think if they don’t take Campbell or Missouri’s Armand Membou, I could see the Patriots trading back into the first round to get someone such as Conerly or Simmons."
One sentence! That's good enough for me to raise my hopes to unrealistic levels. For a while, I sort of thought that Breer was suggesting that the Patriots were going to trade back once Campbell or Membou weren't available, but the question posed to him was, "will they trade back into the first round for a 2nd pick?" so I'm comfortable letting my excitement and imagination run wild here.
*Two* first round picks?! Who does that? For the past decade, trading down to accumulate draft capital has been all the rage, and I guess I get it. That's how you build a better top-down roster. That doesn't, however, account for how boring it is – which is why trading up for another first round pick is music to my ears. Roster-building is a year-round endeavor and a problem for another day; on the first night of the NFL Draft, I just want to be entertained. This would scratch that itch in every possible way. It's almost too good to be true. I'm getting flustered even thinking about it. I should have never doubted you, NFL Insider.
