Most of the 2026 offseason attention on the New England Patriots has centered on the offense for good reason. The team has an MVP-level quarterback in Drake Maye and has significantly upped their game at wide receiver with the trade for superstar A.J. Brown and the signing of solid No. 2 receiver Romeo Doubs.

If the offensive line shows up, the sky is the limit for the Patriots' offense in 2026. But what about the defense?

The defense may also be a force to be reckoned with, and a commentator on "Patriots on CLNS" has locked onto cornerback Carlton Davis III as a potential key contributor. Davis signed as a free agent in 2025 and immediately assumed the No. 2 corner role behind Christian Gonzalez.

They were a solid duo and will likely be even better this season after a year working together.

Patriots Carlton Davis III is a perfect complement to Christian Gonzalez

With Gonzalez manning the top corner spot and covering the opposition's best, Davis will be expected to blanket other teams' second receivers effectively as well. He has that ability, as he showed in 2025, when the defense helped the team to the Super Bowl.

Cody Alexander, in a recent appearance on the Pats Interference podcast, has pointed to Patriots' Davis III as a key potential X-factor on the 2026 Patriots' defense.

Having Christian Gonzalez on hand to take away any team's No. 1 receiver, as he did Jackson Smith-Njigba in the Super Bowl, is a major defensive asset. Yet, the other corner also has to do his job, or the defense can be susceptible to being mauled by that receiver and/or the tight end.

In the Patriots' case at the moment, the corners will be even more important due to the current unsettled edge situation on the team, which can rightfully be called a train wreck.

Due to injury questions and contract issues, the edge and, therefore, the pass rush are now questionable. A lack of pressure on the quarterback will put even more burden on the corners to make plays.

Until and unless the Patriots rectify the edge situation before the season starts, Davis and Gonzalez will be expected to take up the slack, or the defense will falter.

Thankfully, Pro Bowler Gonzalez and solid No. 2 cornerback Davis will likely be up to the task, even in the worst edge circumstances. They'll have to be if the team is to reach the playoffs and further, in light of their far tougher 2026 schedule. The Patriots are fortunate to have a duo of their quality.

If the team can remedy its shortcomings in the pass rush, things will indeed be looking up for their under-the-radar but potentially dominating defense.
