You can never have too much talent in your quarterback room in the NFL, and the Patriots clearly have plenty of that in Drake Maye and Josh Dobbs.
Maye is heading into his second season with a boatload of confidence coming off a strong rookie campaign, and Dobbs was brought in to be a veteran presence and an insurance policy, if God forbid something happened to Maye.
With mandatory minicamp behind the Patriots and the team set to have roughly a month of downtime before they reconnect for training camp in July, now is the time to ponder who will survive the 53-man cutdown come the end of the preseason. And when looking at NESN's Sophie Weller's projections, the Patriots appear to be confident in the quarterbacks they have in their room.
The Patriots might be prepared to roll the dice with Drake Maye and Josh Dobbs
Weller's projections have New England keeping just two quarterbacks this season, as opposed to carrying three like the team did last season. With depth surrounding much of the rest of the roster, it's unlikely the Patriots will keep three quarterbacks. If Ben Woolridge sticks around, don't be surprised if he's on the practice squad.
Keeping just two quarterbacks makes sense for the Patriots in the long term, especially since they will have tough decisions to make at other positions, such as running back and wide receiver.
Veteran back Antonio Gibson could be a surprise cut given the presence of rookie TreVeyon Henderson, along with wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, but the Patriots may need Bourne's veteran presence in the room to go along with Stefon Diggs.
Dobbs has been around the NFL for quite some time now and provides the Patriots with the combination of a capable backup and another veteran voice in Maye's ear. The quarterback room appears to be one of the most clear-cut areas on the Patriots' roster this season, and that certainly means good things going forward.
