Stemming back to even before Bill Belichick was let go, the Patriots have struggled to find the right returner on special teams to be the go-to on game day. They made that a prioritized role this offseason, too, when they chose to release running back Antonio Gibson last month.

Although it likely won't be something they're trying to fill this offseason, either, they will need to address it before the start of the 2026 season, or they'll run into the same issues they have been unable to avoid in recent years.

Fortunately, free agency is right around the corner, and they will have some solid options to consider, one of whom is a familiar face that Mike Vrabel chose to move on from before last season began. And from what we've seen this past week from the receiver on social media, it looks like he might be interested in a return, too.

Javon Baker might be an interesting player for the Patriots to consider reuniting with for one specific reason

Javon Baker, a 2024 fourth-round draft pick, was on the rise as a special teams player throughout the summer last year. But beyond that, he was unable to carve out a role on the roster, making it easier for the new regime to move on from him and test out other players on special teams instead.

Since his release, Baker spent time with the Eagles and 49ers in 2025, but is set to hit free agency again in hopes of finding his next team.

Given his experience with the Patriots and their need for help on special teams, it might be wise for them to consider Baker as an option, even if his role is simply as a returner and not in the receiving corps.

He appeared to take the shift from the offense to special teams fairly well, and there were plenty of reports suggesting he might have found his niche on the team, only to eventually be cut. But things are different now, and there might be room for Baker on the roster in 2026.

He showed a lot of positive traits as a returner, and the Patriots cannot continue into another season without a solid plan in that role. Unless there is another more prominent name available, there's no reason not to, at the very least, look at Baker seriously and consider bringing him back.
