Anyone who has watched the Patriots over the past three games knows the offense has struggled more than expected, and it has only gotten worse since A.J. Brown left their Week 1 matchup against the Seahawks with a high ankle sprain.
Because he was going to be Drake Maye's No. 1 option, others further down the depth chart have had to step up, and for the most part, they haven't delivered the same kind of results Brown likely would have. That includes Romeo Doubs, who was signed in free agency, and Mack Hollins, who appeared to be the next top pass catcher for Maye.
With Brown's return up in the air, given it's unclear if he will return as soon as Week 6 or if they'll decide to keep him sidelined longer, they could explore free agent options to help bolster the receiving corps until and after Brown returns.
Although there are some question marks around someone like Tyreek Hill, he's a proven player with the explosive trait the offense currently lacks, so he could be exactly what the Patriots need right now.
Not to mention, imagine the duo of Brown and Hill later in the season. That might make this idea too good to pass up.
The Patriots could be enticed with the idea of signing Tyreek Hill
From an interception-leading quarterback to a receiving corps struggling to separate from defenders, the Patriots' offense is a hot mess going into their Week 4 game against the Bills.
There's a fair argument that some of Maye's problems would be put to rest if he had Brown on the field, or even if Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte hadn't been let go, so the team may be interested in bringing in another receiver.
Maybe Hill isn't at the top of the list for fans, or even the team, given his controversial NFL history. But the fact that he's still a free agent, and that he hasn't appeared to slow down yet despite his age, makes signing him a bit more enticing for a team as needy as the Patriots.
It only gets better seeing that he tweeted he was ready for some cold weather on Wednesday morning, and what's better than a New England winter?
Sure, rumors have linked him to a potential return to Kansas City, where his career started, and it definitely gets cold there. So there's a strong possibility that they could reach an agreement with him sooner rather than later.
But at the same time, the Patriots need help, and Hill would be an immediate No. 1 option, which wouldn't necessarily be the case with the Chiefs.
The Patriots would also finally have a wide receiver duo with Brown and Hill that can elevate Maye to the level he deserves. They could have had that with Brown and Diggs if they hadn't decided to cut the veteran just one year into his contract. But now they're dealing with the repercussions of that decision instead.
Things could get infinitely better if they sign Hill, as long as he can leave his controversial past somewhere else, since the last thing the Patriots need right now is more bad PR.
Maybe that keeps them from expressing interest in signing him, but it feels like a missed opportunity to help their struggling quarterback for the rest of the season.
