What are they doing?

The New England Patriots should regret trading Kayshon Boutte now. They went from 'we have too many guys; Boutte would probably be inactive on game day' to being down two of their key guys in the span of a month.

A.J. Brown suffered an ankle injury during his Patriots debut, and Mack Hollins left the win over the Buffalo Bills with a non-contact injury. He'll be back this season, but he might need to miss some time- at least one game.

With Romeo Doubs being a bit of a rollercoaster and not many more options, one would assume the team would be in the hunt for talent at the position. However, they didn't have a single wide receiver in the building during their latest workouts.

The Patriots might not be looking for help at wide receiver

The Patriots hosted a group of free agents for a workout after the divisional win. Former running back Jamaal Williams attended, along with OL Cody Ford and undrafted free agents Josh Kattus (TE), Jaren Kump (C), and Stephen Hall (CB). They also signed DB Al'Zillon Hamilton after the workouts.

Clearly, they can see they're thin and banged up in spots, so why can't they see that with their wide receiver corps? Efton Chism II just made the play of his career, and he's shown flashes here and there, but can he deliver consistently? Kyle Williams has been a non-factor; will they finally use him?

Romeo Doubs had a couple of touchdowns in the win against Josh Allen and company. On paper, he should step up as the next man up in A.J. Brown's absence, but the early returns before Sunday were somewhat unimpressive.

As for DeMario Douglas, he's a big-play specialist who plays bigger than his size, yet they don't seem to get him involved as much as they should. He and Hunter Henry might have the most reliable hands on the team right now.

Maybe this is just an overreaction, and the Patriots know their wide receiver corps will be stacked and back to full strength soon. That said, they're not doing Drake Maye any favors, especially after he finally got the monkey off his back with a strong Week 4 performance.

The Patriots' defense has been great this season, but the offense is still a work in progress. If they don't get the pieces and weapons they need to improve, maybe the fault shouldn't fall entirely on the quarterback.
