While the New England Patriots' first-round selection of offensive tackle Caleb Lomu has generally been praised as a shrewd roster-building move, it hasn't been without criticism. Lomu has the frame and technique to hold up against NFL defensive linemen, but analysts questioned whether he had the strength and physicality to sustain and finish blocks.
Just a couple of days into training camp, Lomu is already putting that criticism to rest. According to team reporter Mike Reiss, "Lomu’s first rep in 1-on-1 drills ended with his defender on the ground after a two-fisted shove."
When asked about a critical part of being an offensive lineman, Lomu told reporters, "Being a violent player."

The Patriots could use a bit of a boost on the offensive line. The unit struggled last season, especially in the playoffs. Drake Maye was sacked 21 times in the postseason. The next-highest team total was six.
Defenses like the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks were able to dominate New England's offensive line.
The unit wasn't much better in pass protection during the regular season, allowing 48 sacks, which tied for the ninth-most in the NFL. Will Campbell wasn't the only problem. The offensive line as a whole struggled to keep up in important moments.
While the Patriots didn't replace either of their starting tackles, adding Lomu was a key offseason move in improving the overall quality of the line. The unit now has strong depth and a potential succession plan for right tackle Morgan Moses.
Lomu isn't expected to be a starter this year. But he could fill in at right tackle in 2027 or even take over at left tackle if the Pats decide to move Campbell inside (they haven't indicated that they intend to do so).
Development will be key for the rookie tackle this season. He's still just 21 years old and still has plenty of room for improvement, especially as a physical run blocker. He was an excellent pass protector in college but didn't dominate defenders in the run game.
Early returns in training camp should have fans in New England excited about the rookie's progression. It's clear that the right focus is being ingrained in him as he works on his craft. If this mindset makes Lomu a more well-rounded player, the Patriots could have a future star on their hands.
