Coming out of the 2025 NFL Draft, there wasn't much hype around Patriots' fourth-round pick, safety Craig Woodson. In fact, there was a lot of skepticism about whether he was the right player to take at the time, and how he would fit into a crowded secondary, led by Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers.

Throughout the summer, it wasn't easy for Woodson to stand out, but he clearly earned the trust of the new coaching staff early on, as Peppers was cut ahead of the season and Dugger was traded at the trade deadline.

That presented a new opportunity for the rookie to take advantage of, and from what we saw, he did just that. He was consistently making big plays, recording 79 combined tackles, four for a loss, three passes defended, and two fumbles recovered.

He established a role for himself to start 15 games as a rookie, so much so that he is already being named the Patriots' breakout player ahead of the 2026 season, rightfully so, and he has the support of incoming veteran Kevin Byard III to further support his rise to superstardom.

Craig Woodson is already on a superstar trajectory in an impressive Patriots' secondary

Although most of the conversation about the Patriots' secondary revolves around cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Woodson's rookie performance is starting to gain steam ahead of the 2026 season, and has his teammates, even new ones like Byard, excited for his development.

"I think he's a very talented player, just watching the film, seeing some things that he did last year. Trying to build upon that. A very smart...he's a mature guy as well. I know he's only in his second year. He seems very mature how he goes about his business, so I'm excited to be able to play with him for sure."

Expectations are high for what Woodson can do in Year 2, and although he has things he needs to improve upon, some of which Byard pointed out recently, he's surrounded by the caliber of talent that can elevate his game to a new level in no time.

On top of that, he has already exhibited the traits of a future star in just one season, so it's clear that the future is bright for Woodson and the Patriots' defense.

He now has a lot to live up to, and there is a lot of talk that he could have an impressive second-year jump that will officially put him on the map across the league. Now that he has a more defined role, he will have a good chance to accomplish that in no time, further proving that the Patriots made the right decision to draft him last year.
