The New England Patriots' defensive backfield has some high-profile players, including superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez and first-team All-Pro free agent signee Kevin Byard III.
One player who's flown under the radar this offseason is the Patriots' diminutive but solid slot cornerback, Marcus Jones. SI.com's Ethan Hurwitz has lauded the fifth-year Patriots' cornerback's play against the Eagles in their joint practices.
Jones, at 5'8" tall, is charged with guarding much taller and bigger players than he is, including massive tight ends and bulldozing running backs. Yet, Jones holds his own against them all. Last season, he had 65 total stops with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, 11 passes defended, and eight tackles for loss from the slot.
And, of course, he has massive value-added on special teams as one of the NFL's top punt returners, including two in 2025 for touchdowns.

While the Patriots' best defensive player, Christian Gonzalez, sat out for whatever reason- contract, injury, or both- Jones helped pick up the slack in the defensive secondary in his absence. Though he might not be the center of attention, his play against the Eagles occasioned positive vibes.
SI.com's Hurwitz singled out Jones for solid praise for his work in the week's joint practices.
"So it's been Marcus Jones leading the charge for the Patriots' secondary this week, and his three interceptions off of Jalen Hurts prove just that. The slot cornerback, heading into his fifth season with the Patriots, was more than just the top slot defender on the field. He was easily the Patriots' best cornerback (and possibly defensive player) against the Eagles.
The Patriots picked the Eagles off seven times in a two-day span, and Jones was responsible for three of those. At least two of them would have been returned for a touchdown, but considering Jones' skills with the ball in his hands, you could have assumed the third one would have been returned as well."
Jones has been an underrated cog in the Patriots' defensive secondary for four years now. Joined by Gonzalez, Byard, cornerback Carlton Davis III, and second-year safety Craig Woodson, they comprise one of, if not the best, secondaries in the NFL.
They are the defense's best unit overall, even though depth may be a bit questionable. They may have to rely on young players if anyone gets injured.
That's nothing new for the Patriots, as their depth has even been publicly questioned by the team's top man himself, Mike Vrabel.
The fact is, this team, other than in the wide receiver room, has little depth anywhere else, except maybe at quarterback.
Mike Vrabel obviously doesn't want to risk an injury to any key players in a meaningless scrimmage, and he's totally right about that decision. The situations in the secondary and basically all over the field are similar. The Patriots have little quality depth behind the starters, except at the two positions mentioned.
So far, they have done little to address these obvious shortcomings through trades since free agency and the draft. This could come back to haunt them later.
