Patriots appear ready to turn a corner after Drake Maye's comments about Mike Vrabel

Maye’s words couldn’t come at a more important time for the 2026 Patriots.

During a postgame interview with the Thursday Night Football broadcast crew back in November, Mike Vrabel delivered a truth bomb that left fans of the New England Patriots with all the feels. As if a blowout win over the New York Jets wasn’t sweet enough, Vrabel told the national audience that the main reason he returned to Foxboro to coach the Patriots wasn’t just because of his history with the organization — it was because of the quarterback.

That Drake Maye was sitting right next to Vrabel on the set gave the scene added weight.

“I came here because of the familiarity, and I came here because of Drake," Vrabel said. "I knew what he could be, and it was important to come here and that’s who I wanted to coach.”

At the time, it felt like an unbreakable bond was forming between the two most important pillars of the franchise — the head coach and quarterback. That bond clearly remains, even after a tumultuous few months that have included a brutally one-sided Super Bowl defeat and a now very public situation regarding Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini.

In his first public comments of the offseason, reported by members of The Associated Press this week at the Truist Championship Pro-Am golf tournament in Charlotte, Maye made his feelings about his head coach clear ahead of what figures to be a noisy summer in Foxboro.

“He's our head coach,” Maye said. “I think he's done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready."

"I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being," Maye added. "Like I said — I love playing for him."

Mike Vrabel and the Patriots need Drake Maye's leadership now more than ever

Maye took a major leap last season while leaning on the guidance of Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Entering 2026, Vrabel could find himself leaning more on his young quarterback.

As entertainment sites and tabloids like the New York Post and TMZ have shown over the past month, this Vrabel-Russini story isn’t going away anytime soon. It will likely take a full admission of some sort to put an end to the media circus. Until that happens, the digging and internet sleuthing will only continue.

Maye’s greatest superpower has been his ability to handle the media like a seasoned pro. During his rise to MVP-level stardom last year, he routinely deflected praise — in a fashion that would make Bill Belichick and Tom Brady proud. He showed leadership qualities well beyond his years, and the Patriots are going to need him this summer as they collectively attempt to block out the noise and get ready to defend their AFC East title.

If anything, Patriots fans should be able to find hope in Vrabel’s superpower — his ability to connect with people and build a tight locker room culture. One of the biggest second-guesses of the Patriots’ 2025 run was their lack of moves at the trade deadline. They had just defeated the Atlanta Falcons to move to 7-2 at the time. There was really only one way for fans to reconcile the decision: The team seemed so tight that a roster shakeup might have led to a loss of momentum.

To Vrabel’s credit, the Patriots continued winning, ripping off 10 straight at one point on their way to reaching Super Bowl LX.

The standard has been set, and Patriots fans are going to need their coach and quarterback to be fully locked in and ready to start proving it all over again in 2026. Maye’s first comments are a positive sign — and fans can only hope that he can help pick his coach off the mat so they continue building what they’ve started.
