Stefon Diggs was good enough last season, but good enough won't cut it for a team like the New England Patriots. Romeo Doubs and Kayshon Boutte were also intriguing options, but again, this team had to find a blue-chip weapon for Drake Maye.
After months of back-and-forth, the Patriots acquired A.J. Brown in arguably the least surprising trade in recent NFL history. The benefits of adding a premium pass catcher are pretty self-explanatory, but Browns' arrival brought much more than his contributions on offense.
By having him go against Christian Gonzalez on every rep and practice, the Patriots' young cornerback is getting a speed course in holding his ground against high-end wide receivers. Iron sharpens iron, and that will only work wonders for Mike Vrabel's defense in 2026.
Christian Gonzalez is the biggest winner of the A.J. Brown trade
With all due respect to Stefon Diggs, he wasn't in his prime in his lone season in Foxborough. Brown is bigger, faster, more athletic, and much more physical. Gonzalez also has a bit more experience now, and he'll get to fine-tune his tricks and moves against one of the five best wide receivers in the game.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Patriots are already reaping the benefits of this new friendly rivalry. Brown and Gonzalez are trading big plays and friendly chirps, so he should be in game shape long before Week 1.
Likewise, Brown will also have to be on his toes to get the best of the Patriots' young superstar:

A lot has been said about the Patriots' 2025 schedule, and the haters can't stop bringing up a tougher slate this season and how they're the No. 1 candidate for regression. That might be fair to a degree, but this team has made enough moves to keep the arrow trending up, even against more challenging opposition.
The Patriots' secondary will have to deal with the likes of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, DK Metcalf, DJ Moore, Garrett Wilson, Rome Odunze, Christian Watson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Ladd McConkey, Rashee Rice, and Jaylen Waddle next season.
Having Gonzalez work out against a guy who's on the upper tier of playmaking wide receivers will have him more than ready for that challenge.
Gonzalez's contract situation remains a concern, but it might actually be the last thing on his mind right now. He knows he can't blink when going against A.J. Brown, and he'll ensure to remind the Patriots why they must pay him by trying to one-up their flashy offseason addition on every drill.
